Jagger had been alone for so long. Ever since the wars that scorched the earth between Earth and the alien invaders, they had won, but at a terrible cost. So when he saw the hotel in the distance, he hoped to find people there. But arriving he found it empty. Screaming his frustration to the heavens, he fell into a slump. When the alien ship arrived instead of being killed, a woman came down and told him she had heard his frustration and shared it.
